How to start your own IV therapy business

Are you an RN who is tired of the hospital? By starting their own IV therapy businesses nurses can take more control of their schedules, their clientele, their working conditions, and their earning potential.

But starting a business can be a challenge, and in the fast-growing world of IV hydration business can be a little complicated. That’s why we’re here.

Let’s take a look at what it takes to start an IV hydration therapy business. But first, let’s review.

What is IV therapy?

IV therapy, also referred to as IV hydration, involves helping people get their fluids to improve overall health. Often, in addition to fluid, IV therapy includes a range of vitamins and minerals that can be patient or condition-specific.

IV therapy has become a popular solution for athletes, to help with hangovers, and to treat a range of conditions. Healthline says that that list “includes asthma, migraines, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, muscle spasms, pain, allergies, and sinus and respiratory tract infections. A number of other disease states, including angina and hyperthyroidism, have also shown promising results to IV vitamin infusions.”

Why start an IV therapy business?

There are a number of reasons you may want to start an IV therapy business. Like we said above, there’s the freedom to control your time, and where you work. Depending on regulations where you live, you could work out of your own home, treat clients at their homes, work with a local spa, or open your own IV hydration clinic. There are so many business model options.

There’s also the chance to continue to help people, which is probably why you went into nursing in the first place.

But maybe the best reason to start an IV therapy business is that the market is booming. As IV therapy gains attention and notoriety, more people are catching on to the benefits. So it’s a good business decision, too.

How to start an IV therapy business

Once you’ve decided to take control of your career, there are a few things you’ll need to do to get your business up and running.

Understand the laws and regulations

Before getting too far, you’ll want to do some research into the laws and regulations surrounding IV therapy where you live. The rules vary by state. Some states, like Tennessee, have no laws about IV hydration therapy whatsoever.

Other states require the IV Hydration business to register as a Professional Corporate Practice of Medicine (CPOM). It’s important to recognize that IV therapy is a medical practice.

As the American Medical Spa Association writes, “When practicing medicine, a business must comply with its state CPOM position. The CPOM doctrine is a legal doctrine that generally prohibits corporations, entities, or non-physicians from practicing medicine. Expanded, it prohibits lay people from owning medical clinics and employing physicians.”

Depending on the laws where you are, you may be able to own the business completely on your own. Elsewhere you may need to bring a physician on as a partner and ask them to serve as a Medical Director. And in New York, an entity rendering IV services must be 100% owned by a physician or a group of physicians.

Set up your business

Once you have solved the question of business owners, you will need to take legal steps to set up your business in your area. This may involve registering with state or local governments, working with regulatory bodies, and establishing systems for taxation. You’ll need to find your vendors for supplies and any other equipment you may need.

Create legal protections

You worked hard for your nursing license, and you don’t want to risk it. You’ll want to work to set up legal protections for yourself and your company. This may include liability insurance, malpractice protection, contracts, waivers, and more.

Market to clients

Once you have these things in place, you’ll be ready to market to your first clients. You can work through word of mouth from friends and colleagues, establish partnerships with local businesses, or create your company’s social media pages. Probably, you’ll want to do all of these to help your business grow.
